It's the beginning of canning season. Canning is a great way to preserve food. It doesn't take up freezer space and is relatively simple once you know the basics.
The spring time is time for jam. Yesterday I made rhubarb jam, and today I think I will try strawberry freezer jam with my kids. Certo freezer jam is a great recipe for children. Even a preschooler can make it almost independently. They feel great to say they made it all by themselves.
Making jam does not necessarily save money, especially if you buy your fruit, but I think it is fun, and good for children to learn the process. Most children today just know that jam comes from a jar (or squeeze bottle!) and the jar comes from the store. Besides, homemade jam is always a nice gift - even better with a loaf of homemade bread.
